What Expectations Should I Have Going Into Rehab?

What Expectations Should I Have Going Into Rehab?

A personalized treatment plan is established when an individual arrives at a treatment facility for his first assessment

Recovery is a lifelong process, but well worth the effort.  By having realistic expectations for rehab and treatment, we are allowing ourselves to be more open to treatment and what it has to offer.  Although our expectations might be high when it comes to the treatment we desire, we are also held to a standard during treatment.

What Should I Expect from Treatment?

All treatment facilities should be professional, have medical staff available 24 hours a day and follow all HIPPA rules and regulations.  After the standard expectations are met, what do we expect from our treatment? Included in the following are some examples of what Des Moines residents should expect from treatment:

  • Personalized treatment plans/options
  • Full continuum of care
  • Aftercare referrals

A personalized treatment plan is established when an individual arrives at a treatment facility for his first assessment.  During this assessment, his medical history is reviewed along with his addiction to confirm which level of treatment best suits his condition.  Based on the results, a program is established that can include therapy sessions, medication management and classes.  As the addict develops and improves his sobriety, he will slowly transition into more intense levels of treatment.  With a full continuum of care, he will begin to transition back to daily life in Des Moines, which involves work, school and family.  Treatment facilities should also have an aftercare plan and prepare the recovering addict for treatment completion.  This aftercare plan should refer the patient to another facility in case additional treatment is sought. This plan should also include an emergency plan if he suspects that he is experiencing a relapse.

What Does Recovery Expect from Me?

Although we often question what we should expect from any form of treatment, whether to treat an injury, a mental illness or an addiction we often forget to look at what is expected of us.  Included in the following are some examples of what recovery is expecting from us:

  • Commitment
  • Determination
  • Growth

Treatment and recovery is not an event but rather a process, which requires a lifetime commitment.  By being committed to our sobriety, we are taking responsibilities for any hiccups which could possibly lead to a relapse.  We will face many challenges in sobriety, some external while others are internal.  However, if we remain determined to overcome these obstacles and cope with these challenges, without the use of drugs, we have overcome the odds against us.  While in treatment, we prosper and grow.  We learn new coping skills and gain self-confidence, which can help us overcome bumps in the road whether they be years from now or hours.  This growth can help recovering addicts look at the positivity of sobriety rather than focus on the hardships they face.
